A Truck Transportation Merit Badge Workshop will be held Februrary 6, 2010 from 9am – 12pm at Graebel Moving and Storage, 15456 E. Airport, Aurora, CO 80011.
There is no charge for this workshop, however registration is required. Please note: If you will not be able to complete your obligation, do not register.

If you have any questions about merit badges that don’t have a Troop 88 counselor, or you would like to work with a counselor outside the Troop, please contact Mr. Best – he has a copy of the Denver Area Counselor list, and can assist you in finding a counselor that is close to where you live.

Attention Scouts interested in the Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge Class.
Please remember we are planning on meeting NEXT Tuesday, the 10th of November starting at 6:30. We are planning on meeting in the trailers. Please be a few minutes early, we have lots to cover.
Here are a few things you need to do to be prepared for this class.
1. bring the merit badge worksheet with you
2. bring a writing utensil for note taking
3. bring a merit badge book with you if you have it. The troop has a few to loan but not enough for everyone. The parker library is another good resource for finding these books.
We will be covering item #4 the Declaration of Independence and the bill of rights, #5, and #7 the three branches of government. If you have additional resources on these topics please bring those to share as well. It will make the class much more interesting.
You will be responsible for:
Item #1- can be done easily between now and Tuesday.
Item #2- We will co-ordinate a trip soon- lets talk about ideas on Tuesday.
Item #3- I will try to have articles available Tuesday, but we will probably run out of time so you might want to watch the evening news for 5 nights and write your comments on your worksheets
Item #6-Chose a speech and answer the questions about it- we will have suggestions Tuesday, but if you come with this done- All the better
Item #8- you will need to write a letter to either your senator or representative.

Troop 88 Scouts and Parents…
A couple of notes to think about when considering attending a Merit Badge College:
* These Merit Badge Colleges can be an excellent opportunity to gain fairly easy access to a number of merit badge counselors, all located in the same place, on the same date. As you consider registering for one (or more) of these, please keep in mind the following “tips” (some of these several of you have already learned):
1. Once you decide to attend, sign up EARLY…many of the more popular merit badges (such as EAGLE required merit badges) fill up pretty quickly.
2. Before you sign up for specific merit badges, take a look at the prerequisites. If you want to COMPLETE the merit badge that day, you HAVE to go to each class with the prerequisites completed. Each Merit Badge College usually has a link that highlights which requirements need to be done BEFORE (or outside) of the merit badge class. Usually, the shorter the class (such as those Colleges which have more than one merit badge period in the AM or PM), the MORE prerequisites there are. Also look closely at the class schedule that’s posted on-line…some merit badges are held for more than one period. From experience, the better Colleges have one merit badge period in the morning, one in the afternoon. With a class of 15-20 Scout (usually), classes that last less than 2 hours, unless there is more than one counselor present, don’t have a lot of “substance” to them.
There is only enough time to go over a couple “group” requirements, and the rest of the time is often spent with the counselor reviewing everyone’s prerequisites.
3. Once you sign up for the merit badge(s) you want to work on, go to the meritbadge.org website, and download the merit badge worksheet(s) for the particular merit badge you are working on, and get a copy of the merit badge pamphlet. Our troop library may have a copy you can sign out. These
days, you can find most of the information you need to complete the prerequisite requirements on-line, but the MERIT BADGE PAMPHLET is still your single best source of information. Make sure you cross-check the requirements listed on the front your worksheet with those listed in the pamphlet…some of our merit badge pamphlets are a little “dated”, and may not reflect any changes to the requirements. The merit badge worksheets are usually kept up-to-date, so they (almost always) reflect the most current requirements. The Boy Scout REQUIREMENTS 2009 also has the most current requirements for merit badges (and rank advancement), and is a GREAT resource for anyone actively working on merit badges (and rank advancement).
4. Do your “homework” early. Don’t wait until the night before to start on your prerequisites. Some requirements simply can’t be done at the last minute. Each of you have a lot of “competition” for your time…with school (and homework that goes with that), fall sports, family & church activities, not to mention the MANY Troop 88 activities that are planned. As you are reviewing the pamphlet, consider making some notes on your worksheet for as many of the requirements as you can, even if they are not prerequisites. Doing that will help you participate in class discussions, and help ensure you get the MOST out of your time in each class.

Let me know how it went….many of these Colleges appreciate feedback from the participants…what went well….and what can be improved for the next college.

Catholic Scouts (and parents/guardians) interested in earning the Ad Altare Dei during 2009-2010 religious awards cycle:
What, When, Where:
An Ad Altare Dei (AAD) orientation and introduction meeting for Boy Scouts (and their parents) will be held at St Thomas More (STM) on Sunday, September 20 from 3 pm to 5:15 pm at the school cafeteria. Signs will be posted; the school is located behind church.
- Eligibility: Catholic Boy Scouts who have completed the 6th grade (regardless of troop or parish).
- Scouts: please attend in uniform as this a scouting activity, and you are setting an example for other Catholic scouts.
- I will end this session on time for those who wish to STM 5:30 pm mass.
- The first 30 minutes or so sets the expectations of the program – I would ask parents to stay for that part – and then jump I will into Section One: Introduction.
- Also, please bring your Scout Handbook, bible, pen/pencil, and AAD Scout Manual. (Note: The AAD Scout Manual is available at the Boy Scout Shop – don’t buy the Counselor’s and Review Guide, or online at https://www.praypub.org/praypub/ProductList.asp. If you don’t yet have the AAD Scout Manual, or just want to learn about the program, no problem, just ring paper too and prepare to take notes so you can capture requirements to fill in later.
